My father grew up in Nova Scotia and often talked about the Halifax Explosion, In the 1930’s and 40’s, the explosion would have been in living memory of most people. The Halifax Explosion was a defining moment in Canadian history, due to the immense amounts of tragedy that it created. On 6 December 1917, two vessel collided in the Halifax Harbour destroying many parts of the city, killing nearly 2,000 people and injuring more than 9,000. The Halifax Explosion marked the first Canadian Red Cross involvement in disaster relief – an activity that would become a core element of the society’s work after its mandate was broadened in 1919 to include peacetime involvement. It also inaugurated a tradition of Red Cross disaster relief cooperation across the Canada-U.S. border.
