Shakespeare’s main historical source for the play was a 16th-century translation by Thomas North of a French version of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives. Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc. The drama takes place following Caesar’s return to Rome after putting down a rebellion against the Roman Empire in what are now Spain and Portugal. Plutarch was born in Chaeronea, a city of Boeotia in central Greece around 45–47 CE. This date is inferred from Plutarch 's own testimony (On the E at Delphi 385B), according to which he began studying at Athens with a Platonist philosopher named Ammonius (see Dillon 1977, 189–192, Donini 1986b), when Nero was in Greece (66/67 CE).
